Living and Learning at Salisbury

ERO (2023) noted the following special characteristics of our boarding school setting: “Effective practices encourage boarders to develop independence and appropriate life skills to enable them to transition back to their homes and schools.”

The integration of our boarding school setting into our 24/7 living and learning philosophy ensures that intentional and meaningful learning occurs for students across the day and across the campus in rich and varied ways.

“Boarders are effectively provided with high levels of care and support that contributes to their sense of belonging and wellbeing.” (ERO, 2023)

“The boarding school setting at Salisbury provides a wide range of learning opportunities within and beyond the hostel environment.”

Whare Noho accommodation strands are tailor-made to focus on the wide range of strengths and needs of all students. Establishing and achieving targeted goals are the focus of the programmes designed, and the values of the school and aspirations of the students and whānau are at the forefront of everything we do.

The range of living environments ensures the achievement of goals at individual levels. The flatting program empowers students who are working towards supported independence skills.   The Whare Noho curriculum teaches life skills such as budgeting, shopping, menu planning, groceries shopping and baking/meal preparation.

Hygiene and self-care and living environment skills are part of the daily routine in all areas of the Whare Noho.

Learning to live with other people provides daily opportunities to interact with others and to understand and develop social and friendship skills.
